The Night (Al-Layl)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 But save him who fears 17 one who gives his wealth to become purified, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 except the pleasure of their Lord, the Most High 20 And indeed, soon he will be very pleased. 21
