The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ About what are they asking one another? 1 (It is) of the awful tidings, 2 that they are in utter disagreement? 3 By no means! anon they shall know. 4 Again, by no means! anon they shall know. 5 Have We not made the earth as a cradle 6 and the mountains as pegs? 7 We created you in pairs, 8 And made your sleep for rest, 9 And We made the night to be a covering, 10 and made the day [a symbol of] life. 11 Have We not made seven strong heavens above you, 12 and We have set therein a glowing lamp. 13 From the rain clouds We send waters pouring down in abundance, 14 Thereby to produce grain and plant, 15 and gardens dense with foliage? 16 Lo! the Day of Decision is a fixed time, 17 On that Day when the trumpet shall be sounded, you shall come in droves, 18 The heavens will be opened wide and turn into so many doors, 19 And the mountains shall be moved off so that they shall remain a mere semblance. 20 Behold, Gehenna has become an ambush, 21 a home for the transgressors, 22 Living therein for ages. 23 Neither coolness shall they taste therein nor any [thirst-quenching] drink 24 save boiling water and a stinking fluid -- 25 as a fitting recompense for their deeds. 26 Indeed, they did not hope for a Reckoning, 27 But they (impudently) treated Our Signs as false. 28 And everything have We recorded in a Book. 29 So taste! for We will not add to you aught but chastisement. 30
