a good many of olden times, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
