We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." 46 But when he brought them Our signs, at once they laughed at them. 47 We showed them Sign after Sign, each greater than its fellow, and We seized them with Punishment, in order that they might turn (to Us). 48 They said, "Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance," 49 But when We removed from them the chastisement, behold, they broke their troth. 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion of Egypt belong to me, (witness) these streams flowing underneath my (palace)? What! see ye not then? 51 “Or that I am better than him, for he is lowly – and he does not seem to talk plainly.” 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 Then he incited his people and they obeyed him; verily they were ever a transgressing people. 54 And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all. 55 and We made them a thing of the past, and We made them an example to later people. 56
