Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha. Mim. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 On which all affairs are sorted out and decided 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 enveloping all mankind, [and causing the sinners to exclaim:] "Grievous is this suffering! 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
