Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 The command that We have been sending 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 and fields of grain, and noble dwellings, 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
