A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
