Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
