A company of the former peoples 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
