The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Cloaked one, 1 Rise up and warn! 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 purify your garments; 4 Pollution shun! 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 and woe to him; how he plotted! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
