The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 And for him who hoarded wealth and remained carefree, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit]. 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
