Recite unto them the story of Abraham: 69 When he said to his father and his people: What do you worship? 70 They answered: "There are some idols that we worship and are devoted to them with constancy." 71 (Abraham) asked: "Do they hear when you call them? 72 'Can they benefit you or harm you' 73 They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus." 74 Said [Abraham]: "Have you, then, ever considered what it is that you have been worshipping 75 "Ye and your fathers before you?- 76 Lo! they are (all) an enemy unto me, save the Lord of the Worlds, 77 Who created me, and He doth guide me, 78 "And it is He Who feeds me and gives me to drink. 79 And when I sicken, then He healeth me, 80 He who will cause me to die and bring me back to life; 81 And Who, I ardently hope, will forgive me my sin on the Day of Judgment. 82 [And he said], "My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous. 83 And uphold my name with posterity, 84 and place me amongst the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss. 85 "And forgive my father - for, verily, he is among those who have gone astray 86 And do not disgrace me on the Day they are [all] resurrected - 87 the Day when nothing will avail, neither wealth nor offspring, 88 "But only he (will prosper) that brings to Allah a sound heart; 89 "To the righteous, the Garden will be brought near, 90 and Hell shall be revealed to the misguided, 91 "And it shall be said to them: 'Where are the (gods) ye worshipped- 92 Other than God? Can they save you or even save themselves?" 93 Then they shall be hurled therein, they and the seduced ones. 94 And the hosts of the Shaitan, all. 95 And there and then, blaming one another, they [who had grievously sinned in life] will exclaim: 96 'By God, we were certainly in manifest error 97 In equating you with the Lord of all the worlds; 98 "'And our seducers were only those who were steeped in guilt. 99 So now we have no intercessors 100 Nor any loving friend. 101 Would that we had a second chance [in life,] so that we could be among the believers!" 102 Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 103 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 104
