The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 And he was on the horizon of the highest heaven. 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The heart was not untrue in (making him see) what he saw. 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 when there covered the Lote-Tree that which covered; 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Shall man have whatever he craves? 24 But it is to God that the Hereafter and this world belong. 25
