The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
READ IN THE name of your Lord who created, 1 Hath created man from a clot! 2 Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous - 3 Who teacheth by the pen, 4 taught the human what he did not know. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 Because he sees himself self-sufficient. 7 Surely to your Lord is the return. 8 HAST THOU ever considered him who tries to prevent 9 A slave (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) when he prays? 10 Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?- 11 or if he commands others to maintain piety!? 12 What will happen if the prohibiting rejects the Truth and turns away from it!? 13 Does he not know that God sees? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinful forehead. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We will call the angels of Hell. 18 No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh. ۩ 19
