a good many of olden times, 39 and a good many of later times. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
