Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the dawn 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad, 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 But on that Day none will punish as He (Allah) will punish, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
