(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
