The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the setting star, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 This is only revelation communicated, 4 taught by One who is Stern in power. 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 Then he drew near, then he bowed 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 so (Allah) revealed to His worshiper (Gabriel) that which he revealed (to Prophet Muhammad). 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? 12 And certainly he saw him descend a second time: 13 by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary, 14 Near which is the garden, the place to be resorted to. 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 as well as [in] Manat, the third and last [of this triad]? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 To God belong the End and the Beginning. 25
