We sent to the tribe of Thamud their brother Salih so that they would worship God, but they became two quarrelling groups. 45 He said, "O my people, why are you impatient for evil instead of good? Why do you not seek forgiveness of Allah that you may receive mercy?" 46 They said: 'We predict an evil omen from you and those who are with you' He replied: 'Your prediction is with Allah, you are a nation being tested' 47 There were nine tribes in the city spreading evil without any reform in the land. 48 [and] after having bound one another by an oath in God's name, they said: "Indeed, we shall suddenly fall upon him and his household by night [and slay them all]; and then we shall boldly say to his next of kin, 'We did not witness the destruction of his household - and behold, we are indeed men of truth!'" 49 And they devised a device, and We likewise devised a device, while they were not aware; 50 So see what was the outcome of the plan they made: We utterly destroyed them and their people, all of them. 51 So these are their houses fallen flat, the recompense of their injustice; indeed in this is a sign for people who know. 52 seeing that We saved those who had attained to faith and were conscious of Us, 53 (Remember) Lot, when he said to his people: "Why do you indulge in obscenities when you know (it is evil)? 54 What, do you approach men lustfully instead of women? No, you are a people that are ignorant.' 55 ۞ But his people's only answer was this: "Expel [Lot and] Lot's followers from your township! Verily, they are folk who make themselves out to be pure!" 56 Eventually We saved (Lot) and his family, except his wife. We had decreed that she should be among those who would remain behind. 57 and We pelted them with torrential rain. How dreadful that rain was for those who had been warned! 58
