Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And by ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 Consider the night as it runs its course! 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)? 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 and you love wealth with an ardent love 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 And enter thou My Garden. 30
