The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
