۞ Before this We gave Abraham his virtue, for We knew him. 51 When he asked his father and his people, "What are these images to which you are so devoted?" 52 They replied, "We found our fathers worshipping them". 53 He said, “Indeed you all – you and your forefathers – were in open error.” 54 They said: hast thou come unto us with the truth, or art thou of those who sport? 55 He said, "Nay, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, He Who created them (from nothing): and I am a witness to this (Truth). 56 “And, by oath of Allah, I shall seek to harm your idols after you have gone away and turned your backs.” 57 And then he broke those [idols] to pieces, [all] save the biggest of them, so that they might [be able to] turn to it. 58 (When the people came to the temple and saw the broken idols) they asked each other, "Who has done this to our gods? He certainly is an unjust person". 59 Some among them said, “We heard a youth speak ill of them – the one called Ibrahim.” 60 Their chiefs said, "Bring him before the eyes of the people and let them testify that he has spoken against the idols." 61 [And when he came.] they asked: "Hast thou done this to our gods, O Abraham?" 62 He said: rather he hath wrought it, this big one of them; so question them, if they ever speak. 63 Then they turned to themselves and said: Surely you yourselves are the unjust; 64 With their heads cast down they said, "Abraham, you know that idols do not speak. How then can you ask such a question?" 65 Abraham said, "So, do you worship something instead of God that can neither benefit you nor harm you? 66 Fie on you and on what you serve besides Allah; what! do you not then understand? 67 They cried: Burn him and stand by your gods, if ye will be doing. 68 'O Fire' We said, 'be coolness and safety for Abraham' 69 And they wanted to harm him, but We made them the worst losers. 70 And We rescued him and Lot (and brought them) to the land which We have blessed for (all) peoples. 71 And We gave him Isaac and Jacob in superfluity, and every one made We righteous 72 and appointed them to be leaders guiding by Our command, and We revealed to them the doing of good deeds, and to perform the prayer, and to pay the alms, and Us they served. 73 And We gave Lut the kingdom and knowledge, and We rescued him from the township that committed vile deeds; indeed those evil people were disobedient. 74 And We admitted him to Our Mercy: for he was one of the Righteous. 75
