Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn, 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 And the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departs. 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Did you not see how did your Lord deal with (the tribe of) Aad? 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 and enter My Paradise.” 30
