Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 and ten nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 and by the passing night, 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 of Iram, known for their lofty columns, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements: 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 none shall bind as He binds. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
