Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
You, who have wrapped yourself up with a mantle, 1 Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little - 2 Half of it - or subtract from it a little 3 and recite the Quran in a distinct tone; 4 Behold, We shall cast upon thee a weighty word; 5 Indeed getting up in the night is tougher, and the words flow with strength. 6 Verily, there is for you by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties, 7 And remember the Name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with a complete devotion. 8 (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs. 9 And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance. 10 And leave Me alone [to deal] with those who give the lie to the truth - those who enjoy the blessings of life [without any thought of God] - and bear thou with them for a little while: 11 for, behold, heavy fetters [await them] with Us, and a blazing fire, 12 and a food that chokes, and a grievous chastisement. 13 On the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains shall become (as) heaps of sand let loose. 14 We have sent an Apostle to you as a witness against you, as We had sent an apostle to the Pharaoh. 15 But Pharoah rebelled against the messenger, so We seized him with a strong, crushing grip. 16 If you persist in disbelieving, how will you guard yourself against the (woe of the) Day that will turn children grey-haired, 17 Whereon the heaven will be cleft asunder? His Promise is certainly to be accomplished. 18 This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. 19
