The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does man think that no one will ever have power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 to an orphaned relative 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
