The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 In gardens and springs. 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
