And verily We sent Moses with Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds. 46 When he showed them Our miracles, they started to laugh at them. 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 And they said: magician! supplicate thy Lord for us for that which He hath covenanted with thee; verily we shall let ourselves be guided. 49 But when We removed from them the chastisement, behold, they broke their troth. 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: “My people, do I not have dominion over Egypt, and are these streams not flowing beneath me? Can't you see? 51 Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah]. 54 So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all, 55 and We made them a thing of the past, and We made them an example to later people. 56
