The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ WHEN WHAT IS to happen comes to pass -- 1 there will be nought that could give the lie to its having come to pass, 2 (a calamitous Event) that shall turn things upside down: 3 This will happen when the earth is shaken, shaken 4 And the mountains will be crushed, blown to bits. 5 becoming scattered dust, 6 you shall be divided into three parties, 7 (First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand? 8 Companions of the Left, what are the Companions of the Left? 9 And the Outstrippers, the Outstrippers 10 These will be those nearest to Allah. 11 In the gardens of bliss. 12 A throng of the ancients, 13 And a few of the later peoples, 14 [They will be seated] on gold-encrusted thrones of happiness, 15 Reclining on them, facing each other. 16 Round about them shall go youths never altering in age, 17 with goblets, and ewers, and cups filled with water from unsullied springs 18 No after-ache will they receive therefrom, nor will they suffer intoxication: 19 And such fruits as they fancy, 20 And the flesh of fowls that they desire. 21 And (there will be) Houris (fair females) with wide, lovely eyes (as wives for the pious), 22 The like of the hidden pearls: 23 All this shall be theirs as a reward for their deeds. 24 There they shall hear no idle talk, no cause of sin, 25 Only a saying: "Peace, peace." 26 NOW AS FOR those who have attained to righteousness - what of those who have attained to righteousness? 27 They shall recline on high amidst lote trees without thorns 28 and flower-clad acacias, 29 and continuous shade, 30 And in perpetually flowing water. 31 And fruit, abundant [and varied], 32 unfailing and not forbidden. 33 And raised couches; 34 We have created maidens perfectly 35 and made them virgins, 36 Loving (their husbands only), equal in age. 37 For the fellows on the right hand. 38
