The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 arise and warn, 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 Purify your inner self, 4 shun uncleanness; 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
