The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the night as it envelops; 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 and by that (Power) which created the male and female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 I have warned you then about a raging Fire: 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 And away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil), 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 and confers no favour on any man for recompense, 19 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
