The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the setting star, 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 And he does not say anything by his own desire. 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 The Lord of Mighty Power has taught him, 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 being on the higher horizon, 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart was not untrue in (making him see) what he saw. 11 Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? 12 And verily he saw him yet another time 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 and about the third deity, al-Manat? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Or shall man have whatever he fancies? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
