The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 but We see it near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
