The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created, 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read, and your Lord only is the Most Beneficent, 3 Who taught by the pen - 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 Nay, but man doth transgress all bounds, 6 because he thinks himself self-sufficient: 7 truly, all will return to your Lord. 8 What thinkest thou? He who forbids 9 A votary when he turns to his devotions? 10 Did you consider: what if he is on the Right Way, 11 or orders piety? 12 Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward? 13 Did he not know that God sees? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 Then let him call upon his henchmen! 17 We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)! 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
