Those who did not take part in the battle (of Tabuk), were glad about their staying home against the order of the Messenger of God. They did not want to fight for the cause of God with their property and in person and said, "Do not march (to the battle) on the hot days." (Muhammad), tell them, "The heat of hell fire is much more severe, if only you would understand." 81 They shall laugh but little and shed many tears. So shall they be recompensed for their earnings. 82 Then if Allah brings you face to face with a party of them, and they ask your leave to go forth (to fight in the Way of Allah), tell them: "You shall not go forth with me, and shall never fight against any enemy along with me. You were well-pleased to remain at home the first time, so now continue to remain with those who have stayed behind." 83 And never [O Muhammad] pray for one of them who dies, nor stand by his grave. For they denied God and His Messenger, and died rebellious. 84 Their wealth or children should not tempt you; God wants to punish them through these things in this life so that they will die as disbelievers. 85 And whenever a chapter is revealed, saying: Believe in Allah and strive hard along with His Apostle, those having ampleness of means ask permission of you and say: Leave us (behind), that we may be with those who sit. 86 They were content to stay behind with the womenfolk. Their hearts were sealed, leaving them bereft of understanding. 87 The Apostle, however, and all who share his faith strive hard [in God's cause] with, their possessions and their lives: and it is they whom the most excellent things await [in the life to come,] and it is they, they who shall attain to a happy state! 88 Allah hath prepared for them gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein: that is the supreme felicity. 89
