The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 His wife and his brother, 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
