The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
