He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came unto him a blind man. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself. 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 While he fears [Allah], 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 Nay! surely it is an admonishment. 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 borne by the hands of scribes, 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 Of what [stuff] has He created him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 then the way eased for him, 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 How We pour water in showers 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and clover, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 For use and convenience to you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 wife and sons, 36 On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing, joyous. 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 with darkness overspread: 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
