In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Kaf-Ha-Ya-'Ain-Sad. 1 A mention of the mercy of thy Lord unto His servant Zachariah. 2 when he called upon his Lord secretly 3 And said: "O my Lord, my bones decay, my head is white and hoary, yet in calling You, O Lord, I have never been deprived. 4 But I fear my relatives after me; and my wife is barren. So grant me a successor as a favour from You 5 who will be my heir and an heir to the House of Jacob, and make him, my Lord, satisfied' 6 'O Zachariah, We give thee good tidings of a boy, whose name is John. No namesake have We given him aforetime.' 7 He said: O my Lord! when shall I have a son, and my wife is barren, and I myself have reached indeed the extreme degree of old age? 8 He said, "It will be so! Your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me for I created you when you were nothing before.'" 9 [Zakariya (Zachariah)] said: "My Lord! Appoint for me a sign." He said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak unto mankind for three nights, though having no bodily defect." 10 He therefore emerged upon his people from the mosque, and told them through gestures, “Keep proclaiming the Purity (of your Lord) morning and evening.” 11 “O Yahya – hold the Book firmly”; and We gave him Prophethood in his infancy. (Prophet Yahya was only 2 years old at that time.) 12 And compassion from Us, and goodness. So he was devout, 13 and cherishing to his parents. Never was he insolent or rebellious. 14 Peace be on him on the day of his birth, and on the day of his death, and peace will be on him on the day he is raised up to life again. 15
