He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 and fears (Allah), 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 These verses are a reminder 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 upon highly honored pages, 13 lofty and pure, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 noble, pious. 16 May (the disbelieving) human being be condemned! What makes him disbelieve? 17 Of what [stuff] has He created him? 18 From a drop of liquid; He created him and then set several measures for him. 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 Then He will raise him up again when He please. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 And olive and palm trees 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 on that Day each person will flee from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 Some faces will shine, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 whereas some faces will be covered with dust 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
