The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 But We see it very near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
