The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the sun and its rising brightness 1 And by the moon as it follows it (the sun); 2 Consider the day as it reveals the world, 3 and by the night when it enshrouds him! 4 And by the heaven and Him Who built it; 5 and the earth and all its expanse! 6 By the soul and Him Who propertioned it, 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 Indeed successful is the one who made it pure. 9 And he who confines it will surely come to grief. 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 When among them the great wretch arose, 12 Then the messenger of God said to them, "This is God's she-camel. Let her drink." 13 But they belied him, and hamstrung her. So their Lord crushed them for their sin and leveled it (their village). 14 He does not fear the consequence. 15
