And certainly We created man of clay that gives forth sound, of black mud fashioned in shape. 26 and the jinn We had created before from flaming fire. 27 Your Lord said to the angels, "I am about to bring into being a man wrought from mud. 28 When I have formed him and breathed My spirit into him, fall down in prostration before him," 29 So the angels fell prostrate, all of them together 30 Except Iblis (Satan), - he refused to be among the prostrators. 31 (Allah) said: "O Iblis (Satan)! What is your reason for not being among the prostrators?" 32 He replied, "I am not one to prostrate myself to a man whom You have created out of a clay of moulded mud." 33 (Allah) said: "Then, get out from here, for verily, you are Rajim (an outcast or a cursed one)." [Tafsir At-Tabari] 34 And lo! the curse shall be upon thee till the Day of Judgment. 35 Iblis prayed, "Lord, grant me respite until the Day of Judgment". 36 Allah said: "For sure you are granted respite 37 till the appointed time. 38 (Iblis) said: "O my Lord! because Thou hast put me in the wrong, I will make (wrong) fair-seeming to them on the earth, and I will put them all in the wrong,- 39 Save such of them as are Thy perfectly devoted slaves. 40 (To which God) said: "This way is right by Me. 41 “Indeed you do not have any power over My bondmen, except those wanderers who follow you.” (The devil is unsuccessful in tempting Allah’s chosen bondmen to commit sin.) 42 Gehenna (Hell) will be the promise for all of them. 43 it has seven gates: and each gate has a portion of them allotted to it. 44
