A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
