The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
