He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 when the blind came to him. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for he who is sufficed 5 to a rich man, 6 Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness). 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 And hath fear, 9 you ignore him. 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Pious and Just. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 and then We cleaved the earth asunder. 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 And Grapes and nutritious plants, 28 And olives and palms 29 thickly planted gardens, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 In order to benefit you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening blast is sounded, 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 mother, father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
