The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 of an orphaned relative 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
