The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it plunges, 1 your companion is not in error nor has he gone astray. 2 and neither does he speak out of his own desire: 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 Thereafter he drew nigh, then he let himself down. 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 His heart did not lie of what he saw. 11 What! do you then dispute with him as to what he saw? 12 And indeed he did see the Spectacle again. 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 When the tree was covered with a covering, 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 All that is in the life to come and all that is in this life belongs only to God. 25
