The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 Eager to roast; 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
