The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 but We see it near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 tearing away his skin! 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
